Our Mission

OUR MISSION is to improve the quality of life and health of children residing in the Ukrainian orphanage system, and to create opportunities for these children to reach their maximum potential. Currently, our primary focus is on the medical and educational needs of orphaned children in Ukraine.

UCARE covers the cost of medicines, surgeries, and hospital stays for children with disabilities. We are working on projects to provide prosthetics and cleft palate surgeries for Ukrainian children.

UCARE is also concerned about the young adults who are aging out of the orphanage system. Through the distribution of scholarships/stipends, we will enable some of these youngsters to further their education at universities, colleges, and trade schools.

A group of our UCARE volunteers travels once a year Ukraine on a "Route" to distribute supplies to the orphanages, interview the orphanage staff and evaluate the facilities. Some of the supplies are donated here in the USA, but most are purchased in Ukraine with dollars we earn thorugh our fundraising efforts.

UCARE members participate in summer camp programs for orphans in Ukraine by working as volunteer camp counselors, doctors and workshop leaders.

Without counterparts in Ukraine, our work would be extremely difficult and challenging. We help to subsidize the staff of our sister organization "Priyateli Ditey," in Kyiv, Ukraine. They provide much help to us in Ukraine, including administering the scholarships, and helping to organize routes and camps.

Detroit volunteer Olga Liss with orphans on a "Route"

The following is a translation (abridged) of an article which appeared in Ukrainian "Pravda," an internet newspaper. Maryna Krysa, the president of Priyateli Ditey (Приятелі Дітей), our sister organization in Ukraine, was interviewed for this article, and described some of the work they do in Ukraine. (The translation was done by our current president, Alexandra Kosogof of Chicago.)

The statistics the article gives are frightening, and emphasize the importance of our work with orphans in Ukraine.

Priyateli Ditey is our sister organization in Ukraine, and helps to administer our scholarship, medical and other programs. Details of the scholarship program are given in the article.
